Pier Lounge
aka The Pickled Herring
The locals know it famously as The Pickled Herring. This location has been a local hangout since 1937. Come gab some stories and take in a cold beer or one of our drink specials, and yes - toss down an order of Grandpa Jack's pickled herring or a craft Pickled Herring Cocktail.
History, Community, and Family
The Pier Plaza history dates back to 1937, when the Gonia brothers had a log cabin at the current location. It was a trolling
headquarters for the local fishing industry, featuring box lunches and ice for keeping fish. In 1954 Jack and Shirley Johnson bought it. A new building eventually went up, and every day - including holidays - it filled with families, fishing industry workers, and the local coffee clutch for breakfast, lunch and dinner. More than just a restaurant, the Johnsons and their staff had a duty to serve the community, acting as a cafeteria for the workforce and sometimes even referred to by locals as “the pier café.” Just about everyone in the local community from ages 14-85 had worked on this corner.
Today Pier Plaza is proudly owned and operated by the third generation of Johnsons. Someday this generation, too, will be reflecting on its history - a history integral to the history of Bayfield itself, which they welcome you to be part of.
